Tag Time: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Thank you Jamsu for tagging me!

I am a pretty big Buffy fan so this made my day lol

Buffy: A Character Who Lives A Double Life

June from Marie Lu’s Legend books. Is she on the side of the Republic? The Patriots? The Colonies? Haha I mean I know but still, watching her try and navigate as a double agent is awesome and so much fun.

Willow: A Badass Witch
A Badass Witch…I mean does Ead count? I mean she gets accused of it so we’re going with it, I love Ead from The Priory of The Orange Tree.
Xander: A Character who Just Provides Comic Relief

Altair from We Hunt The Flame gives me absolute life and makes me chuckle so much. I’m actually pretty hard to make laugh while reading a book but Altair’s hilarious.

Dawn: Favorite Sibling Relationship
Fred & George Weasley from Harry Potter. I adored their twin relationship…pardon me while I go sob in a corner now.
Angel: An Extremely Broody Character

Alec Lightwood…I mean he grows out of it, eventually, but he was a broody little shit at times.

Cordelia: A Character Who Undergoes Major Growth

Hesina from Descendant of the Crane. She starts out as a seeker of truth, but she comes to realize sometimes the truth is more than we can handle.

Spike: A Character With A Redemption Arc

Balthazar from Bad Breed The Necromancer’s Bride/ Gaslamp Gothic series. I cannot think of a character more deserving of this atm, and he’s pretty great.

Giles: A Parental Figure

Oshe from Kingdom of Souls was such a breath of fresh air, a supportive father who loved his. daughter and had no reservations on showing affection. More of this, please?

Faith: A Character With Questionable Alliances

Draco Malfoy, I mean, let’s be real, I question even his choice in goons.

Tara: A book With LGBTQIA Romance

The Veiled Threat, a kickass female Elven Pirate Captain and a pretty awesome Princess. Need I say more?

I tag
Everyone.
HOARD THE TAG, LOVE THE TAG, MAYBE SOMEDAY USE THE TAG.

The Tag of Rage and Sorrow

Hey guys, Krisha did this really fun tag in honor of Rage and Sorrow coming out in September! She also has a great review of it up!

RULES

  • Link back to the original creator’s post (Krisha @Bookathon )
  • Tag your friends to do the tag
  • Have fun and read this beautiful series!

ESMAE: A Book/Character which empowered you and made you feel strong

Maité Martinez in Off Planet was so strong and just refused to give in. I don’t mean simply physically but her heart, she goes through so much and she continues to do so, one day at a time in this amazing book.

ALEXIE AND BEAR: A Duology you recommend with all your heart

I haven’t read a duology yet, but technically I’ve started and since I’ve really enjoyed the first book, We Hunt the Flame I’ll go ahead and recommend Sands of Arawiya.

MAX: A Book which made you feel seen

Anne of Green Gables, in the era before stubborn redhead characters, there weren’t a lot of us gingers on the scene and so when I read this as a child, I fell in love. Anne was a redhead, a dreamer, someone who loved to read and write and I felt like finally someone had written a book for kids like me when I was young.

TITANIA: A Book/Character which was witty and made you laugh

He’s not exactly ‘witty’ but he’s droll enough for me to be like ‘all the yes’ and that’s Okame from Shadow of the Fox. He cracks me up!

AMBA: A Book you ended up loving even though you were not sure about it

The Golden One/The Alien Chronicles this book/this trilogy has my heart and soul. I wasn’t sure because I was just finding my love of reading when a very dear friend lent me the book(s). High sci-fi fantasy, thiiiiiick, and well, all my trepidation was cancelled out. I really don’t think I go one month without raving about this trilogy and thinking about Ampris, the Golden one herself.

KIRRIN: A Book you have mixed feelings about

Storm Front by Jim Butcher. On the one hand, it was highly entertaining and I had fun reading it, on the other hand, I want to smack the author about and ask him why he was allowed to run rampant with his blatant sexism.  DAMN IT.

KYRA: A Book/Character which turned out to be disappointing

Stalking Jack the Ripper/Audrey Rose Wadsworth. Honestly, I thought this was going to be amazing, I was excited. If this hadn’t been a kindle book I would have tossed it across the room. Such good ideas but I could not stand the idea that in order for Audrey to be smart that she had to put down feminine traits. And DAMN THAT ENDING.

RADHA AND SYBILLA: A Book with great supporting characters/great team

Crown of Feathers. All the Characters, all the scenes, all the things. Seriously, you have people you love, people you love to hate, and people that you just want to read more about!!!!! AND PHOENIXES!

I TAG

All the people, but especially Kal because this is all her fault, I’m obsessed with A Spark of White Fire because of her.

GoodReads Tag

Hey all, another tag is coming your way, I’m just too tired after like a concert and weird chest injury, I’m just ready to sleep my life away but first, I was tagged by the amazingly awesome Isabelle @ Bookwyrmbites. She got it from Lindsay @ Singer of Stories.

So here we go!

WHAT IS THE LAST BOOK YOU MARKED AS READ?

That would be the last book I finished reading, GhondathaI really try to keep up with my GR on what I’m reading and what I’ve finished, it helps me so much when I go to look at what I’ve done for the month lol.

WHAT IS THE LAST BOOK YOU MARKED AS “TBR”?

That would be Shadows of the Short Days by Alexander Dan Vilhjálmsson. Joanne Harris rated it and I’m in love with one of her books, so I figured, if it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for me. It hasn’t come out yet but you can bet I’ll be watching for it! It’s also set in Reykjavik which I always find to be beautiful, so, I’m already a sucker for the setting.

WHAT BOOK DO YOU PLAN TO READ NEXT?

I’m getting my NetGalley list under control currently, and I’ve already started my next read but haven’t been able to go full throttle if you know what I mean, just read the first couple of chapters, I start the real reading tonight and that’s The Fever King by Victoria Lee. [Thanks for the rec, Kal- The Fever King Review]

I can honestly say that even though I’ve only read 2 chapters in, it’s already sucked me in which is impressive. It’s like Descendant of the Crane all over again lol.

I also have two other goals for this week, so, we’ll see lol. I was hoping to have this read done by tomorrow, but, shit happens.

DO YOU USE THE STAR RATING SYSTEM?

Can we not just have half ratings as well? Is that too much to ask? I liked Isabelle’s response with having a Highly Rec, and so on. I don’t mind the stars, I just hate it because not all my 3 stars are the same, like a mystery 3 star holds a different weight than a poetry 3 star and so on.

ARE YOU DOING THE 2019 READING CHALLENGE?

Yaaaaaaaas.

I already beat my challenge. I have exceeded my own expectations. Whoops. [That never happens]

DO YOU HAVE A WISHLIST?

No. My want to read is just like ‘oh I may someday get to this before I die’ I tend to keep my wishlist separate on Amazon. They are the ones that I know I’ll definitely get.

WHICH BOOK DO YOU PLAN ON BUYING NEXT?

I’ve been doing a lot of preorders lately, well, I say a lot, but more than usual as I try not to buy books but I’ve been going wild these past few months and really need to slow my roll. That being said, the next preorder coming out is Descendant of the Crane, and I am very very very very excited about it.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE QUOTES? SHARE A FEW!

Yes. I actually have to laugh because half of them were just accidental highlights of random crap but I do have real highlights and quotes!

Each of our careful footsteps tapped home the message that we had come to a lawless place of death, a place where the hopeful invention of fearful man that I clutched in my hand would likely prove a feeble defense, and where the answers to greater mysteries than those we’d spent the last dozen weeks trying to unravel would be made plain with brutal finality.”
– Caleb Carr, The Alienist

Yes, it’s a lie, but the media repeated it, and a lie repeated becomes perception, and perception is reality. Perception is also very hard to change.”
– A.G. Riddle, The Atlantis Plague, Book 2

But loving lets you look, and look, and look again. You notice the back of a hand, the turn of a head, the way of a walk. When you first love, you look blind and you see it all as the glorious, beloved whole, or a beautiful sum of beautiful parts. But when you see the one you love as pieces, as whys—why he walks like this, why he closes his eyes like that—you can love those parts, too, and it’s a love at once more complicated and more complete. ”
– Ally Condie, Crossed, Matched #2

It’s sweet to sacrifice for one we love—it’s sweet to have someone to sacrifice for,”
– L.M. Montgomery, Chronicles of Avonlea

I detest poor people,” thought Amory suddenly. “I hate them for being poor. Poverty may have been beautiful once, but it’s rotten now. It’s the ugliest thing in the world. It’s essentially cleaner to be corrupt and rich than it is to be innocent and poor.”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald, This Side of Paradise

Her heart is played like well-worn strings; in her eyes, the sadness sings— of one who was destined for better things.”
– Lang Leav, Love & Misadventure

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS? SHARE A FEW!

Hmmm. Okay, let’s see, I’ll go for like 4

  1. L.M. Montgomery
  2. J.K. Rowling
  3. Agatha Christie
  4. Philip Pullman
  5. Tamora Pierce

(Ahhh Isabelle we both have excellent taste! Tamora Pierce Rules)

HAVE YOU JOINED ANY GROUPS?

Yes! I’m not always active in them, but I usually keep up with their current reads if they have them, well, okay I try. Here are all the groups I’m in.

– GoodReads Feedback [This one is great if you want to know what’s up when something on GR isn’t acting as it should]
– Booksirens Book Reviewers [I don’t do anything with this one but ‘eeeeey it’s there]
– Harry Potter Fan Club [Uh, I guess I forgot about this one, it’s not very active or what I expected but not a bad group!]
– Around the World in 80 Books [Okay I want to be more active in this one but it’s hard to get the books for it, but it’s pretty awesome anyway]
– Juliet’s Library Book Club [I’m still on the waiting list for the book from last month from this group, but it’s got some great picks!]
– Agatha Christie Lovers [Are we even surprised? They’re reading Murder on the Orient Express right now so I skipped ahead and read next month’s book since I didn’t want to reread the current pick yet.]
– 2019 Reading Challenges [This group is amazing, different reading challenges divided by monthly, quarterly, yearly, I’m doing three yearly challenges, the GR challenge itself, clear the shelves and reading prolific works by an author!]

Who Do I tag?

You. All of you. Please, take this tag, hoard it, use it, and if you want to be tagged in this post properly, let me know!

The Currently Reading Tag

Not sure who to tag for the creation of this tag (let me know if you know!) but I shall go ahead and tag Kal @ Reader Voracious as she tagged me [Thanks Kal!!!]. Also, used tag 4x in that, I’m impressed with me already.

How Many Books Do You Usually Read At Once?

I usually can only read one fully at once, the drive in me to finish what I start is high, buuuut, occasionally I may up to 2 or 3 at once. Right now though I’m on beat back the NetGalley mode and I’m just reading one at a time and chucking them in a pile lol.

How Do You Decide When To Switch Between Multiple Reads?

So, if a book is just going slow paced, I may switch after a chapter, or if it’s not slow paced but the chapters are 20+ pages, I may like to switch between that and a much shorter book which I will inevitably finish in a sitting and have somehow managed to just read one at a time again in the end lol.

Do You Ever Switch Bookmarks Partway Through A Book?

No, but I don’t really use bookmarks unless I am reading more than say two at once. Also, I mean I just memorise the page number. *Shrug*

Where Do You Keep the Book(s) You’re Currently Reading?

My Kindle goes where I go in the house, I suppose actual books are either on the nightstand or the side table in the living room. I do not have a fancy or special place for current or tbr books.

What Time Of Day Do You Read The Most?

Night time, I have time during the day but the problem is that my time is divided between blog hopping, writing blog posts, doing chores and cooking, and so I usually put off reading until night time.

How Long Do You Typically Read In One Session?

Uh….a couple of hours usually? But can totally be more, some nights I’ll read 3/4 hours depends on how tired I am, the pacing of the book, and uh, if I just plain feel like it lol.

Do You Read Hardbacks With the Dust Jacket Off?

Who keeps them on? I mean I suppose if you’re out and about but I think the dust jackets are too pretty, and reading in bed they just slide about and annoy the crap out of me.

What Position Do You Mainly Use To Read?

Uhhhh sitting up? I…Idk, laying down but sitting up? Omg lol this question is making me think too much.

Do You Take Your Current Read With You Everywhere You Go?

If I’m going on the train, sure, but I tend to get carsick while reading too much unless laying down in the car so that’s a no for me on regular travel I suppose. I always bring books with me when I go somewhere for holiday but chances are that I won’t read lol.

How often Do You Update Your Goodreads Reading Progress?

Too much. I am that annoying person who updates every time she picks up the book unless I know it’s going to be a lot during the day, most of the time I try to exert self-control but that rarely works out for me. [*NetGalley list looms in background*] I actually love GR for that reason, updating progress, it’s great when I put a book down for a while and since I don’t use bookmarks much, I can just go look up what page I was on if I’ve forgotten.

FIRST OFF

Thank you, Samfor the tag!! ❤ If you don’t follow her, go do so, she’s amazing and awesome and so are her posts.

  1. I play 8 instruments. [Well, you don’t play your voice but is technically an instrument, damn it] My main instrument was voice with violin and piano as my minor instruments.
  2. I am not quite nearly bilingual but almost there. My Pops speaks Spanish, our family is Tejano on his side, we were there [in Texas] before the fake cowboys 😉 and my Mother speaks Italian. I can read and write Spanish better than I speak it and like most lazy children of ethnically diverse families, I understand what my parents say to me in Spanish, I just answer in English. This also drove my Spanish grammar professor insane. I don’t know how he didn’t harpoon me. Oh, that’s right, I have a minor in Spanish. Ironically enough I can pronounce everything under the sun in Italian but I don’t always know what I’m saying buahaha. So my Italian skills are not nearly as good as my Spanish ones.
  3. I was a substitute teacher. I mostly filled in for history classes (another minor of mine, oh yes I had two minors on my degree and two minor instruments) I hated it at first but in the end, was quite sad to leave my students. I speak teenager (I.E.: We had movie Fridays and they knew the drill, ‘snitches get stitches just not from me’)
  4. I am half Italian, half Tejano/Mexican and I am pale as the moon with dark auburn hair. (Which used to be just red) So you know, I got some weird looks at family reunions from the distant cousins I never met, a lot of ‘Enrique, who is this?’ ‘Uh…that’s my daughter, you know, the third one in the line up’
  5. I have spent the majority of my young adult life as a single mom. I only have had a partner in raising my daughter since meeting my husband (and this is still a new process to us, the whole family unit of mom, dad, and spawn)[For those curious, got married super early, he was a douche canoe who doesn’t try to contact so, eh]
  6. I have sung on stage with Gil McKinney, Sam and Dean’s handsome gramps on Supernatural. AND. He complimented me on my harmonies, there’s a video floating around on Tumblr of it lmfao.
  7. I like to cook. But I fuckin hate baking. I will walk 4 miles for a cupcake before I whip some up. I don’t know why you all would want to know this, but now you do.

I honestly am not sure I could list 15 blogs that haven’t been tagged, so I’m just going to tag people I’m not sure have done it and we’ll see how many I get. [If you’ve done it already or don’t want to, ignore this! If you want to and you’re not tagged, let me know and I’ll tag you!]

My [Kinda] Good Reading Habits!

Rules:

  • Pingback to this post @ Ally Writes Things or the creator!
  • List some of your good reading habits, the things you think you do well.
  • Nominate some of your blogging friends

Thank you Isabelle @ Bookwyrmbites for the tag! So, I’m overall an incredibly unhealthy person bahaha, but, I’ll give you all what I can!

Reading a physical book at bedtime instead of my Kindle Fire (does not apply to my keyboard kindle)

I don’t always do this but I try to, why? Well, my kindle fire is just like a phone screen, the light can be bad for my eyes and sometimes I get a headache from staring too long at a screen. So! I try to keep to my older kindle which has no backlight or physical books. Also when I read my kindle fire it just keeps me up so late because I can’t judge as easily how much is left when I’m not looking at physically how far I’ve gone/actually have left.

Kindle App on my phone

This keeps me from ever being left without something to read. Sometimes I don’t want to take a book or kindle on the train with me, especially if I’m going to a rehearsal and then coming straight back. Not to mention my Kindle(s) and the app will sync and so I never have to worry about remembering my place either! A lot of times though I’ll pick a book to have on my app that is just for times like that so it’ll be a slow burn read but I don’t mind that too much.

A TBR Stack that I’ve already decided to donate

Oh, that’s right, I have a whole stack of books not on my bookshelf but next to it. These books are ones I’m curious about but unless I find myself completely floored and unable to ever part from it, it’s going straight to donation. They are things that aren’t my usual genre, ones where the synopsis has left me with ‘eh sounds okay.’ I received a shit ton of books recently this is why this pile exists. Usually what happens is I’ll buy one or two things from the Charity Shops with the intent of reading and returning. I just find that for me it’s just best to get rid of things I won’t reread again or didn’t love otherwise those books will take up space on my shelves where I could be putting things that have rocked my world. Like my husband. Jk. He’s not on a shelf.

Having a little journal for the purpose of keeping notes on eArcs/free reader copies

I also use this journal to keep up with lists of what I’m reading/what I want to read but it’s mostly for notes. This really helps me when I go to write a review. A lot of times my notes are harsher than the review, but I try not to judge a book for something that’s just personal preference unless I feel it’s something that might ruin it for others. In other words, all my Slytherin-ness is contained in this lovely cosmic covered journal. It really helps though with taking a step back and analyzing my thoughts and see how they might have changed from the start to the finish of the book (for better or worse bahah).

There we go! My [kinda] good reading habits! What are yours?
