Evangeline Fox was raised in her beloved father’s curiosity shop, where she grew up on legends about immortals, like the tragic Prince of Hearts.

My Review
This novel is a true testament to how Garber’s just growing as a writer (saying that, I adore her writing style right from the start with Caraval). This ups her game, I could find no fault with this and I already want to reread it though I just finished it about twenty minutes ago.
If you loved the Caraval trilogy you’ll probably love this, if you didn’t love Caraval, you will still probably love this. Evangeline is nothing like Tella or Scarlett; and neither is her story. Jacks was perfection like always, and the setting of this was just a *chef’s kiss* level of perfection as well.

–My first initial reaction and review
I don’t know that I can top this short but efficient review, honestly this book blew me away. This is one is so far the very top of my favorite reads for 2021.
The pacing is wonderful. I didn’t find that it got stagnant nor did Garber rush us through, we got to enjoy this trip up North, soaking in more of this amazing world that I love so much. That’s another thing, the world-building was fantastic. There’s more lore, there’s new maps and kingdoms and it’s just perfection. We also get nice little nods to Caraval, and those were so fun to read.
Evangeline Fox might also be my newest favorite MC from Garber, though my love for Jacks as best character is undying so, there’s always that. Anyway. Evangeline is not just this sugar spun frosting, she’s got substance and is just as pretty as sugar spun frosting so like a double whammy. She’s not devoid of doubts, insecurities, or even oblivious to her own naivety and I really appreciated that in her as well as watching her grow against the contrast that is Jacks.
There were the usual twists and turns that I couldn’t always quite guess, which is one of the things I love about Garber’s books and with that sort of ending I don’t know how in the world I’m meant to be at all patient and wait for book 2. So in closing, let’s copy and paste this one more time:
