My Review

I love Jensen’s Dark Shores books, so hearing there was going to be a little ‘.5’ book, well I definitely and immediately signed up for a chance to read it before it came out. I was not disappointed.

After not reading the books for a while, I completely forgot how much I missed the 37th legion and Marcus so it was great to see their sort of ‘humble’ (read that as dark and tragically sad) beginnings under the 29th legion.

They go through so much, and Marcus, despite being this guy you sometimes want to smack upside the head, proves why he is such a good leader.

All the characters in this have so many hard choices to make and they all make what they believe to be the best choice while knowing it’s hard and ugh so much pain, hits you right in the gut, that’s how every hard decision felt for me as a reader.

Marcus shows another side, and one that’s for his men that he doesn’t even show them! It’s so impressive how many layers are to this guy but I did love Agrippa more and it’s easy to when Agrippa can do things differently that Marcus has to do by the rules.

Though this isn’t as long as the other books and could be considered a novella, it is most certainly enough to be a book. And best of all you can read this one in any order you please with the other two, and soon to be three, Dark Shores books.

I actually thought this was a tough read for my little black heart, I wanted to hide all the members of the legion under blanket and protect them. Except one. You know who you are. But I also LOVED seeing how Marcus was before the events of the first Dark Shores book and getting to know Agrippa this well!

Silvara’s chapters were definitely super interesting and as you see her and Agrippa interacting, holy cow, it kinda has you on the edge of your seat towards the end, wondering how the oppositions will fare with the truth(s) out!

SPEAKING OF WHICH.

THAT ENDING.

IT WAS MIND-NUMBINGLY SHOCKING SOMEHOW DESPITE HAVING AN INKLING THAT THIS ENDING WASN’T GOING TO BE A RAINBOW DELIGHT OF SUNSHINE.

Shouting over with, all things aside…

Great pacing, excellent writing style as always from Jensen not to mention more world-building for the Dark Shores universe. Combine that with a good and solid plot, intrigue, heart-wrenching moments, and shocking revelations…I’ll give 5/5 cups of hot chocolate.

Thanks so much to the author for an eARC of this in exchange for my honest opinion. This book comes out digitally tomorrow (1/26/2021) for readers!
