The Ship of Shadows

Blurb:
Aleja whiles away her days in her family’s dusty tavern in Seville, dreaming of distant lands and believing in the kind of magic that she’s only ever read about in books. After all, she’s always being told that girls can’t be explorers.
But her life is changed forever when adventure comes for her in the form of a fabled vessel called the Ship of Shadows. Crewed by a band of ruthless women, with cabin walls dripping with secrets, the ship has sailed right out of a legend. And it wants Aleja.
Once on board its shadowy deck, she begins to realize that the sea holds more secrets than she ever could have imagined. The crew are desperately seeking something, and their path will take them through treacherous waters and force them to confront nightmare creatures and pitch-dark magic. It will take all of Aleja’s strength and courage to gain the trust of her fellow pirates – and discover what they are risking everything to find.

My Review

This was the PERFECT pirate adventure! MG readers or not, I think anyone can get enjoyment out of this.

Kuzniar gives us a ship full of women pirates who are more legend than real to those who have even heard about their ship, The Ship of Shadows.

There’s as I’ve said, girl pirates, a residential ghost in their library globe, magic rooms that can fade away, and of course the shadows. And these are just the fun elements on the ship.

The pacing is on point, fast and filled to the brim with adventure and a delightfully varied crew of pirates to go with it. There are inventors, weapons masters, scientists, and all the others expected onboard a magnificent pirate ship.

The MC, Aleja, is a girl who has always dreamed of adventure, wanting to be a famous explorer. Of course, she’s been rebuffed for her dreams, they’re not what girls should be thinking of, but that doesn’t stop her and one day adventure finds Aleja.

She’s found herself onboard The Ship of Shadows and it’s hard to not become part of the crew and take part in their quest. They’re doing all the things that Aleja has ever dreamed of, and they have a fantastic library onboard their magical ship. So Aleja is in for the ride, going on adventures that will consist of lost cities, pirate hunters, secret maps, and of course treasure too!

A perfect read for any MG reader with an adventurous spirit and/or a love of pirates. The spawn and I have started reading this as our bedtime story last night, so, I get to enjoy the crew of the Ship of Shadows all over again and I can’t wait for the spawn to get to know them as well.

5/5 cups of coffee from me, thank you so much to the Publisher, NetGalley, and TheWriteReads for a copy of this in exchange for my honest opinion as part of the blog tour.
