Sea of Tranquility

When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.

It’s really no surprise to anyone who has been perusing this site before to find out I love sci-fi. Sea of Tranquility is the sort of sci-fi that also breaks some genre boundaries compared to my usual picks so I was very excited to read this. The various periods of time, the time travel and interstellar travel made this all I needed for it to be the basis of a great sci-fi novel. And it was. The atmospheric writing was a *huge* win for me and so was St. John’s use of language, it was a quiet but powerful way of writing. She gathered up tiny little threads and wove them all into something all encompassing that left you wanting to know more. And since I got to read this with one of the library book clubs I’m a part of, I got the benefit of hearing straight from our amazing Librarian that the other books will be just as amazing and this isn’t the last I’ll see of a good amount of these characters.

If you’re not sure about sci-fi but like more literary styles of fiction, I’d recommend this one easily. Who knows, maybe if you read this and enjoy it you’ll end up exploring more sci-fi. It was a great discussion on this book, and I was staunchly in the ‘I hands down liked it’ group.

You’ll notice some of these reviews are shorter, they’re done a little further out than I normally would and I’m just trying to get some new reviews out there but also this is a relatively short book (as are most of the graphic novels and manga I read for comic book club, so I just don’t feel the need to give super long reviews).

4/5 Cups of coffee from me, I still wanted a little more with some of those threads she was collecting but over all, really enjoyed this book.
