Swamp Thing returns in a new series that stars Levi Kamei as the next Guardian of the Green!
My Review
The art was absolutely gorgeous in this, I read it for the graphic novel club at my local comic book store (first read with them, for me). It was fun to discuss this with people get a better feel of it. Overall, I just wanted more. There was no real dive into ‘Becoming’ for the Swamp Thing, Levi was suddenly Swamp Thing and there was vague allusions to it but that was about it. Still the coloring? AMAZING. Seriously I would sit here and just admire the pages again any time.
There’s a lot of loose ends, and I don’t mean that saying I’m just accusing the book of this when I haven’t read the others. There were points brought up and explored and there are a lot of loose ends just not dealt with. I think one of the funniest moments was the tiny appearance of Batman which though made me smile, was absolutely not needed other than me going ‘Yay Batman!’
Levi’s possible love interest is definitely a lost cause about as much as figuring out his Swamp Thing origins, which is a bummer. You want so much more but you get minimal and then it’s just not satisfying enough for a first volume (four issues). This means you’re not (I wasn’t) enticed to go to volume 2. I’m purely doing it out of some curiosity and wanting to adore the artist and colorists more.
So will I read the rest? Yea I think so. Will I do it any time in the near future? No I don’t see that happening. So, 3 (3.25) cups of coffee from me. A valiant attempt.
