Dark Skies Review

A RUNAWAY WITH A HIDDEN PAST

A COMMANDER IN DISGRACE

A KINGDOM UNDER SIEGE

GoodReads

EDIT: Growing as a reader means recognizing when a book is problematic. My ratings have been removed on GR and though I enjoyed reading this at the time, there’s no denying that, I now know this has harmful material. A colonizer romance in books 1 & 3 (and I’m assuming the fourth and final book too) *THIS BOOK DOES NOT HAVE THAT PAIRING,*with a MMC who is part of the Roman Empire (though one can argue he as just as much a slave as the FMC) who is in a toxic relationship with a Black FMC whose people are on the way to being oppressed. They aren’t as a whole but this series focus on a situation where she is indeed oppressed by the Empire he represents, whether by his choice or not. It’s a slippery slope and I’d rather recognize the faults in me and my reading choices than to tap-dance about it. So please be warned before going further.

Ah back to Jensen knowing how to crush my heart. It’s like a guarantee at this point. Seriously, this series has me in some sort of grip. Whereas Dark Shores is focused on Teriana and Marcus, this book is for Lydia and Killian. Now, there’s no real technical order to Dark Shores and Dark Skies, you can read either one first, I just did it in publication order and more recently, I’ve read them together (more about that later, maybe); hence my review for Dark Skies finally appearing!

Lydia is a very intriguing character for me, she’s so different from Teriana, and yet I love them both so fiercely. Seeing her story unfold was amazing. I had the same rush of excitement and tension for this book as with Dark Shores. Jensen has such an amazing writing voice and she knows just how to build up a story. Instead of being intimidated by the size of this book in comparison to Dark Shores, I flew through it just as quickly.

Killian is like how I imagine I can be personality, the little shit. So I mean of course I loved him buahaha. But honestly, he’s just as complex as the rest of the cast, and man, I was not a big fan of Malahi before but somehow I dislike her so much more this time around. Still, even she’s complex and intriguing.

And then of course the ending rips your heart out and makes you want to jump into the next book.

Overall I think that I’m too enthralled to write a super coherent review but here it is; great pacing, fantastic characters, great tension building romantically and plotwise, and gorgeous prose. 5/5 massive cups of coffee from me.
