In the pages of MetaMaus, Art Spiegelman re-enters the Pulitzer prize-winning Maus, the modern classic that has altered how we see literature, comics, and the Holocaust ever since it was first published twenty-five years ago. (39 years ago)
MY REVIEW
MetaMaus has been a rather impactful read to me. I was very lucky that the publisher sent me ‘The Complete Maus’ for me to read in 2022 and it’s lived in my head since then. Spieglman was able to convey so much and he redefined comics for a lot of us; a memoir not a superhero. SO! This was a fantastic read to see what it was like for him; the process, the journey and history of it all after he’d put it out into the world.
This was also a very dense read, it’s n to a graphic novel but it uses examples of art throughout it so a sort of mix of novel and graphic novel. Despite it’s size it’s not boring, but it was a thick book and I took my time on it. This took over his life during and after, changing the trajectory for a lot of things for himself let alone to the masses who were reading his book.
If you want an in-depth look into his mind and his story behind the story then I highly recommend this. He also gives us the transcript of the recordings with his father that made up Maus. The circumstances of his mother are talked about more as well which was something I was interested in on top of everything else. Even though it’s a nice long book, I don’t want to speak too much because it’s really just all about the backstory of Maus and Spiegelman so if you’ve read Maus or intend to read it this might be the thing for you to stick on your TBR.
Definitely 5/5 Cups of coffee from me and thanks so much to Pantheon books for the chance to read this in exchange for my honest review. An emotional, heavy read but a fascinating one.
