Hidden in our world, a society of vampires originating in Africa, can only feed from select human bloodlines.
My Review
First off, you can take this book out of my cold dead fingers.
That being said, let’s get to some fangirl review of this because I have no objectivity left in me.
This is enemies to lovers super dark academia meets vampire with all the murder mystery and lore and slightly gory vibes that a reader could want.
Hear me out. If you’re looking for a darker read especially for the Halloween season, this might be for you. The pacing is good but it is a ‘slow burn’ novel, we need to read about Kidan building up her reputation in this world she’s been thrust into and we need to also have her unravel the past for us while she does it, so there’s no rushing here and I greatly appreciate that. At the same time though it didn’t feel slow to me, I had a hard time putting it down most nights.
Kidan is not a ‘good’ character on the moral scale but she is an interesting and complex character which I’m all in for. In fact none of the characters are really wholesome that we really get to know at all, and that is again a nice relief, there’s maybe one or two and I’d love to talk about those more but spoilers so I won’t. Susenyos is also so beautifully complex, I could read about him all day long about his past and likewise with Kidan. They do such monstrous and dark things and yet they’re both carrying two very different beasts of burden on their shoulders. And it makes me want to know more.
You throw this in with the fact that Kidan and Susenyos also have two very different missions with a slightly similar goal and you get this perfect dark academia…with…did I mention vampires? SO ALL THE YES. In fact even more YES because they’re African vampires and I get to read about all this new lore on top of some new twists and I’m just such a happy bookworm.
There are times I really didn’t like Kidan or Susenyos but reading about their ambitions, it was really like reading a train wreck you didn’t want to look away from at times. Kidan is so focused on her sister she loses sight of herself of anything else almost and then we see her having to deal with the person she thinks is responsible for her sister’s disappearance and BE THEIR HOUSE MATE. Forced proximity for anyone? (ANOTHER YES)
Another thing I loved though was watching Kidan actually forge connections with people because it’s clear she’s been isolated and always having to be the one with all the burden on her so to see her in any group setting and enjoying it? I loved it.
Anyway, if you’re a Vampire lover, if you love diverse books, if you love enemies to lovers…may I present this beauty of a book? But be prepared. I need book two about a week ago. Warning this is graphic at times where the violence and blood are concerned. I had no issues with that, but, it might be something for some to consider.
5/5 Cups of Coffee, excuse me while I go binge read more vampire books this season.
