Final Girls by Riley Sager

In an instant, she became a member of a club no one wants to belong to—a group of similar survivors known in the press as the Final Girls.

My first Riley Sager read and I’m a fan! This book definitely hooked me in and I barely wanted to put it down. The pacing is pretty good but it did feel sluggish at the start, just once it got off the ground it was perfect (pacing-wise). There were a lot of ‘twists’ that I think we’re meant to figure out, and perhaps distract us from other twists so that was fun but while you’re reading and don’t know about some of the twists it almost feels predictable.

I really didn’t understand Quincy or Lucy or Quincy putting up with Lucy or Quincy and that poor man in the park. So the horror movie trope perks were all there and it should have been better than it was but these things I’m mentioning are what made this book sort of a wildcard; not in a good way.

I think the funniest thing by far was that for some reason it didn’t click the author was a man, and I was puzzled because of how the MC woman is written and then…the moment I realized that this was indeed a male author, it all made sense. I felt that this wasn’t like them doing something wrong as much as me used to reading so many books by female/nonbinary authors for this genre lately that I was momentarily taken off guard on why this felt different. What I’m trying to say is that I was confused on why the women were acting the way they were because it seemed to make no sense and then I found out…they were written by a dude. I’m not saying no man can ever write a woman, there are plenty of fantastic authors that do that. This was not one of them in this instance (but I hear high praise on the authors other books so maybe that’s different).

But for real. Men writing women….

Anyway.

Overall I greatly enjoyed the way Sager tackled this book and the ending, it was very satisfying without being too… ‘organized?’ I feel with horror/thriller books we don’t always want to close every loophole, and nor do we want too much information at the end. Pretty enjoyable if you don’t take it more than at face value and quick to read! 2.5 Cups of coffee, rounded down to 2 because—why is her virginity part of this god damn plot lolol.
