My Review

Right. I know, I know, I did not love this book, I’m sorry. I wanted to but I had an inkling the style wasn’t going to be for me but it had dragons so I thought surely I’d like it anyway.

I was right and wrong.

I’ll start with the positives! We have EDS rep and the author is an own voices author for this, hurrah!!! We need more MCs with varied rep so there are books for all people to see themselves in.

There are dragons!

This book is super easy and pretty enjoyable to read!

Pacing was pretty good for the first half!

The writing style was pretty fluid so it was again easy to read!

Now…

I know, I have to put the negatives now. I promise I’m not out for blood, I just need to get this off my chest.

**I do not know how EDS works, I don’t have it, so I really can’t comment on the author’s writing of it, it’s not my place.**

Zero character development (we feel they’ve grown but, it felt very stunted to me).

No enemies to lovers, it was basically insta-romance when they finally interacted past the snipes.

The triangle felt eerily reminiscent of others in the style and personalities of the characters.

I’m sick of ‘dark’ bad boys with leather and tattoos.

I really hated Divergent…so…I think this means I was doomed to dislike this.

The ‘today’/modern vernacular was JARRING. I am in a medieval fantasy and suddenly there are ‘toxic men’ and ‘fucking hot’ people. I don’t doubt they’re hot but it totally threw me every time it happened.

Dragons could not save this book.

WHY WERE THE MONTHS THE SAME

WHY.

I am infamous for my lack of punctuation. I write run-ons like no one’s business. So does Yarros. It’s bad if I can tell.

I’m not sure I approved of the way Rhiannon was used, it felt…like she was USED.

None of the characters felt more than 1D even though I wanted to get to know them, especially because everyone else seemed intriguing.

Having a War School that basically encourages murder despite needing the numbers for an ongoing war seems mind-numbingly stupid. I cannot fathom the waste of life when to put it bluntly, you’d still need ‘cannon’ fodder why wouldn’t you just toss the ‘unworthies’ with the infantry? WHY WOULD YOU USE SUCH POOR STRATEGY?! This, this was a real pet peeve of mine, like say what you will, I will. not be convinced otherwise.

Overall, despite it being fun and easy to read, it was not a good read for me.

2.5/5 Cups of coffee, and yea, I’ll probably read the sequel.
