Hold the phone, stop everything.
Guys, this is a scifi book, Amera is America after global warming, it’s the people who survived whatever plan the pre-ice aged humans could put together to save their species.
This included making them more prepared for a world post fast food and cars.
I loved the premise of this so freakin’ much, I’m such a huge sucker for post apocalypse stuff. Especially when it’s so wonderfully packaged.
Okay, enough gushing about the ideas that make up the basis.
Amera has an elected monarchy, different monarchs for each of the nine realms and Violet is the Princess of Neyr. She’s been kept out of the eye of the public, her parents gave her as much privacy and safety as their position allows but there are things that not even a Princess can avoid, and so the day has arrived for her to show her powers and that’s where we meet Violet. During that ceremony.
And during that ceremony is where Violet seems to have killed her dad with her sudden surge of power, the power that has been barely a spec on the radar has suddenly had a large and somewhat violent outburst. In that moment of tragedy and chaos, Violet runs away. Afraid that she’s the first murderer since the beginning of Amera.
What ensues next is pretty awesome, she leaves the forest city to go into the wild, where the Wild Steel Mountains are. Violet is looking for an escape, sure that she’ll never be able to go home but having nowhere else to turn. Luckily for Violet she has some unknown and some unexpected help, and she also uncovers a discovery that is even bigger than her staying away from home, and so the Princess makes the hard decision to go home.
I really liked Violet being insecure and so naive, it made SENSE. She was a sheltered princess, but holy cow I also admired that inner strength to go on even when no one would have been expected to in her position. She made the hard choices, she kept her head up, and she did this all while learning some pretty crazy and hard truths.
The different powers and realms definitely got my interest, and I also really enjoyed the side characters, this reminded me of the way I really enjoyed the Matched trilogy but also it was completely different in style and content, just gave the same vibe/joy for me reading it.
Violet’s interactions with them were all so different and pretty well fleshed out.
That being said, I would say this is also a good read for younger YA readers, that doesn’t mean this book is any less enjoyable to the older end of the designated audience, just that it’s got a very wide range on it.
Behr didn’t slack on the world-building and I appreciated that, I really look forward to seeing more of the world which I have a feeling we might in book two, but who knows, fingers crossed! [Speaking of, book 2 is out this year some time and I can’t wait.]
3.5 huge cups of coffee/hot chocolate from me! Thanks so much to The Author/Publisher and Rock Star Tours for an eARC of this in exchange for my honest review as part of the blog tour.
Who’s ready for a book trailer?
